I don't know this opera but when I read the names of the cast I couldn't resist to download it. Cesare Siepi is one of my favorite opera singers of all times, never heard a better Don Giovanni. Mephisto should suit him well, too!
Greetings, Margie

Hi Margie. Mefistofele is the typical italian opera at its best. Great indeed and the masterpiece of Arrigo Boito known as a great libretist, in works like Simon Boccanegra, Otello e Falstaff by Verdi, La Gioconda by Ponchielli and other less important works. Cesare Siepi is the greatest Mefistofele ever and along with Tebaldi and Del Monaco make this recording the best recording of this opera ever made. A curiosity: Giuseppe Di Stefano was supposed to have recorded this opera instead of Del Monaco but when the sessions had still started and a lot of music had already been recorded, Di Stefano, for reasons we don't know (who knows Di Stefano well, may guess) was replaced by Del Monaco. The highlights of this Mefistofele with Di Stefano are available and maybe someday I'll post it for the fans of this recording make a comparison. May no one listen to me, but I prefer Di Stefano who is, for me, the greatest tenor of the last century (while his voice was at its peak), but it is another story. Enjoy the opera 'cause it is great. Greetings.
